Microbial strain optimization

Microbial strain optimization

Microbial strains can be manipulated in order to improve their technological properties. The classical examples are improved product yield and/or improved growth characteristics. Furthermore, probiotic and other properties can be improved by use of screening technology.

Bioneer has extensive experience in microbial strain development and offer services both within classical (non-GMO) strain improvement and within the use of recombinant DNA technology.

Classical (non-GMO) screening procedures:

  • Random mutagenesis to generate a mutant library (UV light mutagenesis, chemical mutagenesis)
  • Screening assays for mutant libraries (design of customized assays, implementation of known assays)
  • High throughput screening (HTS of small liquid cultures using robotic equipment)
  • Strain characterisation (growth, gene expression, probiotic properties)

Recombinant DNA techniques:

  • Gene cloning and sequencing
  • Targeted gene knockout
  • Upregulation of selected genes

Bioneer also offers single operation services useful for microbial strain development:

  • Colony picking (robotic transfer of colonies to microwell culture plates)
